Drive-in
Rack Storage System Increases Capacity by 250%
Londonderry
Freezer, a cold storage facility located in Londonderry, New Hampshire,
was looking for ways to better utilize the cube capacity of their main
freezer. The square foot cost of freezer space is very costly, so any
additional space created would add significantly to Londonderry Freezer's
bottom line. Londonderry Freezer was double or triple stacking "like
product" in a large portion of their warehouse, a process that
was inefficient and, at times, causing significant product damage on
the lower pallets due to crushing from the weight of the upper pallets.
The
Epoch Systems Team was asked to design a storage area that would eliminate
the need to stack product on top of each other, utilize the existing
powered equipment (fork trucks), and fit within the existing storage
area footprint.
Epoch's
solution was a high-density structural drive-in rack system. This new
system would allow Londonderry to store five pallets high and five pallets
deep. Where they had been storing 440 pallets, they could now store
1,100 pallets.
The installation
of the new rack system was challenging due to the extreme cold temperatures
that were at -20°F! Our installation crew worked with special freezer
suits and was able to minimize interruptions to Londonderry Freezer's
day-to-day business activities.
Londonderry
Freezer realized a near threefold increase in pallet storage capacity,
increased inventory control, reduced product damage, and, an overall
savings in warehousing costs. Ed Dougherty, Manager of Operations at
Londonderry Freezer, had this to say: The design, delivery, installation
and follow-through exceeded all our expectations. We look forward to
working with Epoch on our next project."
